Insomnia

Insomnia is a disorder characterized by an individual’s inability to initiate and or maintain sleep.

There are two types of insomnia: primary insomnia and secondary insomnia. Primary insomnia is caused by non-health issues (e.g., stress, etc.). Secondary insomnia is caused by health conditions (e.g., cancer, depression, gastro-reflux, etc.).

Insomnia can be either short term or chronic. Short-term insomnia usually lasts a day or a few weeks. Chronic insomnia usually last a few weeks to months.

Signs and symptoms of insomnia include the inability to fall asleep when tired, waking up earlier than expected and the inability to resume sleep when desired.

Both disorders cause people to experience daytime fatigue from the lack of quantitative sleep.
